LABUAN REELS IN FOREIGN, LOCAL ANGLERS IN INTERNATIONAL DEEP SEA FISHING CHALLENGE

22/04/2025 02:22 PM

LABUAN, April 22 (Bernama) -- Labuan once again cast its line into the international tourism scene as 212 anglers from Malaysia and abroad set sail in the prestigious Labuan International Deep Sea Fishing Challenge 2025.

The highly anticipated competition, which not only celebrates sport fishing but also boosts the island’s appeal as a maritime tourism destination, is offering a total prize pool of RM180,000, including premium DAIWA-sponsored fishing gear, and kicked off today at the Public Marina jetty.

A fleet of 22 fishing vessels of various sizes departed for the rich fishing grounds around Layang-Layang Island and the Spratly Islands today.

Labuan Corporation (LC) chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib said this year's participants include 123 Malaysians from across the states of Sabah, Sarawak, and Peninsular Malaysia, a mix of seasoned competitors and fresh faces.

“The challenge continues to attract international attention. Hong Kong leads the foreign delegation with 48 participants, followed by Singapore with 40, and one participant from the United States.

“Many of them are returning contenders who bring along their families and friends, turning the event into a vibrant tourism occasion for Labuan,” he told Bernama after the flag-off ceremony.

Mohd Sukuran said that since its inception in 1997, the deep-sea fishing challenge has become a magnet for angling enthusiasts worldwide.

He noted the event plays a crucial role in positioning Labuan as a premier destination for eco and sports tourism.

“This isn’t just a fishing competition. It’s an economic catalyst. Visitors come not only to compete but to explore Labuan’s cultural charm, marine biodiversity, and local cuisine.

“The spin-off effects for the local tourism and hospitality sector are significant,” he added.

Mohd Sukuran said the fishing tournament is one of four flagship events under the larger umbrella of the Labuan International Sea Challenge 2025, which runs until April 27.

“The event will culminate with a display of the prized catches at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex on the final day, offering a visual treat for locals and tourists alike.

“Labuan’s strategic push to leverage niche tourism, particularly marine sports and eco-adventures, continues to bear fruit, with events like this reinforcing the island’s identity as ‘The Pearl of Borneo’s Waters’,” he added.
