MELAKA, April 20 (Bernama) -- Newly elected Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Deputy President Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad will be on a mission to promote more local referees to feature internationally and double efforts to further empower the quality of Malaysian referees at the global level.
Nur Azmi who would become a mediator between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Council (NSC) said he does not only want to focus on problems faced by athletes and associations since various efforts had been made in the matter.
"So now we also want to focus on how to help the NSC to improve the technical aspects in bringing referees from Malaysia to the international level.
"If we can take it to the international level, it will certainly be an advantage for us, especially in sports that do not involve the use of computers in the scoring system," he told reporters after chairing the Malaysian Karate Federation Exco (MAKAF) meeting here today.
Asked to comment on his victory for the position, he said the vision and idea had been agreed upon by the NSC Director-General and as a further action, a workshop would be held to determine the type of sport that should be focused on in the aspect of judging.
"For this reason, even if the individual is not in the association, we want him to still work together to raise the name of the country and ensure that the targeted medal is achieved. This is more important because the cost for a workshop is very expensive and not all associations can afford it," he said.
Yesterday, the media reported that Nur Azmi was elected as the new OCM Deputy President to fill the position vacated by former Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin (did not seek re-election).
Nur Azmi, who is also the president of the Malaysian Karate Federation (MAKAF), defeated Malaysian Lawn Bowls Federation (PLBM) president Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz for the post.
