AYER KUNING BY-ELECTION: POSTPARTUM MOTHER ATTENDS EARLY VOTING PROCESS

TAPAH, April 22 (Bernama) -- A housewife who is still in confinement made the effort to cast her vote today at the early voting centre for the Ayer Kuning state by-election.

Surya Mat, 40, who was in a wheelchair and carried her 32-day-old baby boy, was assisted by Election Commission (EC) officers and brought to the early voting centre at the Senior Officers’ Recreation Hall, Battalion 3 of the General Operations Force (GOF) here at 8.40 am.

“Even though I’m still in confinement, I want to fulfil my responsibility as a registered voter. This is my third time voting here in the 17 years that I have lived at the GOF 3rd Battalion,” she said when met by reporters.

Meanwhile, Corporal Mahamat Udin, 59, said although he no longer has the mobility he once had due to an accident six years ago, he still came in a wheelchair to fulfil his duty as a voter.

He said today’s vote might be his last while still in service, as he is set for mandatory retirement in September after nearly 40 years with the police force.

“This is also my first time voting physically, as I previously voted by post,” he added.

Meanwhile, two young policemen were excited to cast their votes for the first time at the early voting centre at Dewan Anggerik, Tapah district police headquarters' Residential Complex here.

Constable Muhammad Zaid Muhamad Zaidi, 20, said the opportunity to vote for the first time gave him a new experience and a deep sense of responsibility towards the country.

“After voting, I felt satisfied because I have fulfilled my duty, especially since we have the opportunity to choose our leader,” he said.

Constable Muhammad Azizie Haqqiem Azman, 22, admitted to feeling a little nervous as it was his first time voting.

The early voting process today at the two centres involved 500 police personnel and their spouses.

The Ayer Kuning state by-election this Saturday will see a three-way contest between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek, and Bawani KS from Parti Sosialis.

The by-election is being held following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, 58, on Feb 22.
