IPOH, April 17 (Bernama) -- Over 2,000 students were absent during the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination in Perak for various subjects in 2024.
State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said that among the areas with the highest number of absentees was the Kinta Utara district, with 587 students.
"Meanwhile, the others were Larut, Matang and Selama (309), Manjung (250), Hilir Perak (135), Kuala Kangsar (118), Hulu Perak (117), Kinta Selatan (107), Kerian (102), Bagan Datuk and Perak Tengah (55) as well as Muallim (51).
"Among the reasons for the highest absenteeism of SPM candidates in the examination are family problems (1,116), having a job (477), health issues (132), transportation (20), death (11), accidents (10), moving abroad and detention by authorities (2)," he said.
He said this while answering a supplementary question from Mohamad Amin Roslan (PN-Pengkalan Hulu) who wanted to know the number of SPM dropouts last year during the question-and-answer session at the State Assembly sitting here today.
Earlier when responding to the original question from Koo Haai Yen (PH-Keranji) regarding student dropouts, Khairudin said that according to the records of the Perak Education Department (JPN), the number of dropouts in primary and secondary schools is currently 2,047 students.
"This comprised 135 primary school students and 1,912 secondary school students.
"In addition, the highest dropout rate is due to expulsion, amounting to 38.24 per cent; and among others lack of interest in school (35.07 per cent); stopping school due to work (12.13 per cent); and stopping school due to family problems (10.14 per cent ),” he also said.
He added that to address this issue, the Perak JPN and district education offices are implementing several programmes, namely Jaulah ABC (Anak yang Baik lagi Cerdik), Outreach Murid Cicir, Ziarah Cakna and Platform Kehadiran Murid -- Red Flag Risiko Cicir (RFRC).
