LABUAN, April 24 (Bernama) -- The Labuan Silat Beach Championship 2025 has drawn a record-breaking 700 participants from across Malaysia and Brunei, making it the largest turnout in the event’s history.
Held from April 24 to 25 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex, the two-day championship is one of the key attractions of the ongoing Labuan International Sea Challenge 2025 (LISC).
Organised by Pesaka Labuan, the championship drew participants of various age groups from Sabah, Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, and neighbouring Brunei, all showcasing their talents and skills in the traditional Malay martial art.
Pesaka Labuan president Khairul Ghani said the championship has been a staple in Labuan’s sports calendar, consistently drawing strong participation and setting itself apart as the largest silat gathering compared to similar events in the island.
“This year’s turnout is the most significant yet, and it highlights how the event has grown in stature...it’s a proud moment not only for the organisers but also for Labuan’s sporting community.
“Held as part of the larger LISC 2025, which runs from April 22 to 27, the silat championship has proven to be one of the most engaging events in the series,” he told Bernama after the flag-off ceremony.
Khairul emphasised the event plays a crucial role in preserving the traditional martial art of Silat on the island, ensuring that the legacy continues for future generations.
“It is important for us to sustain cultural pride and identity through such efforts, especially as modern influences grow stronger,” he said.
Khairul said beyond the sport itself, the influx of athletes, coaches, supporters, and families has provided a much-welcomed boost to Labuan’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
He remarked that hotels, homestays, Airbnb accommodations, and local eateries have also seen increased patronage, contributing to the island’s economy.
Khairul said the Labuan Silat Beach Championship 2025 adds vibrant cultural value to the wider Sea Challenge celebration, reinforcing Labuan’s status as a hub for sports tourism and traditional martial arts in the region.
The championship was flagged off by Labuan Corporation deputy chairman Simsudin Sidek.
