ARAU, April 11(Bernama) -- The production of Harumanis mangoes in Perlis is expected to see a slight decline this season due to unpredictable weather, ageing trees, and pest infestations.
State Agriculture, Plantation and Consumerism Committee chairman Razali Saad said the projected yield for this year stands at 2,400 tonnes, slightly lower than last year’s 2,497.58 tonnes.
“The hot weather conditions were suitable at the beginning, but the erratic rain affected the flowering and fruit growth process. The condition of the flowers falling and the trees getting older are among the factors expected to reduce production," he told reporters after visiting two Harumanis orchards in Arau yesterday.
Despite the dip in quantity, Razali said the overall quality of the mangoes has improved, with a higher number of large, Grade A fruits produced this season.
“We hope entrepreneurs provide excellent service to customers and refrain from overpricing or misleading buyers regarding fruit quality. The Harumanis brand must maintain its strong reputation,” he said.
He added that the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) are taking strict measures to monitor pricing and quality.
Consumers who fall victim to fraud or price manipulation are encouraged to report directly to enforcement authorities, he said.
