LABUAN, April 8 (Bernama) -- Labuan’s container port operator Megah Port Management Sdn Bhd (MPM) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering efficient, high-quality cargo handling services while working closely with its regulatory partner, the Labuan Port Authority (LPA).
Managing director Datuk Seri Patrick Tiong said that speed and reliability are central to MPM’s operations as these factors play a key role in building trust among international shipping lines and encouraging more frequent port calls to Labuan.
“Efficiency is not just a competitive advantage. It is essential for positioning Labuan as a key maritime hub in the region,” Tiong said to Bernama after receiving the first working visit by newly appointed LPA chairman Dato Danyal Balagopal Abdullah.
Tiong said the visit marked a significant step toward strengthening collaboration between the regulatory authority and MPM in enhancing the port's competitiveness, security, and service standards.
He also shared a significant development involving MPM’s sister company, Sailion Shipping, which has been awarded contracts by major international cruise operators to manage cruise vessel operations in several Malaysian ports, including Penang, Langkawi, Port Klang, and Kota Kinabalu, as well as in Brunei.
“This milestone not only reflects the confidence of global cruise lines in our capabilities but also strengthens our position as a regional maritime logistics player,” he added.
Tiong said MPM, together with Sailion Shipping, Kren Antarabangsa and Lions Transport, forms a group that is currently the largest private-sector employer in Labuan, with over 400 employees.
“The companies play a vital role in supporting the island’s economic and logistics infrastructure,” he said.
He said Labuan Port, strategically located along key shipping routes in the South China Sea, is seen as a crucial logistics and trade gateway for East Malaysia and northern Borneo.
“The ongoing push to upgrade services and port infrastructure is expected to attract more shipping liners and logistics investments to the island.
“MPM and LPA are expected to work closely on future infrastructure improvements, digitalisation of port services, and safety and environmental initiatives,” he said.
