SIBU, April 14 (Bernama) -- Sarawak Energy will conduct a controlled water release from the Bakun Hydroelectric Plant (HEP) reservoir from April 18 to May 9 as part of routine water management efforts.
Approved by the Sarawak Rivers Board, the release aims to protect dam integrity and regulate river levels following the accumulation of over 700 million cubic metres of water.
“The public has been notified in advance through announcements and social media. While water levels downstream may rise, discharge will be carefully regulated to minimise community impact,” it said in a statement here today.
Residents are urged to stay alert due to potential fluctuations in water currents.
This seasonal operation is a standard practice and reflects Sarawak Energy’s efficient water management, supported by its Dynamic Water Dispatch Management System introduced in 2020.
The system enables long-term forecasts and is used across Bakun, Murum and Batang Ai hydroelectric plants.
Sarawak Energy assures that operations follow international safety and environmental standards, including those set by International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) and the Hydropower Sustainability Standard (HSS).
The public is encouraged to follow updates via Sarawak Energy’s social media and the SEB Cares app.
