KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) – Mount Everest witnessed a historic surge of human triumph on Sunday as 135 climbers stood atop the world’s highest peak, marking one of the most crowded summit days of this spring climbing season.
The Nepal Department of Tourism described the number as exceptionally high, with all 135 climbers successfully reaching the summit.
Director at the Department of Tourism, Himal Gautam said favourable weather had enabled the high number of ascents, with more climbers expected to summit on Monday.
“This May 18 was designated for a 'maximum summit plan,' which led to the high number of successful ascents.
"Despite early delays due to bad weather, the past three days have seen the season's highest summit activity." said Gautam quoting The Himalayan Times.
More than 200 climbers have reached the summit of Mount Everest so far this season, with peak activity recorded over the past three days.
This spring, a total of 468 climbers — 86 women and 382 men — from 47 expedition teams have received permits to attempt the ascent.
