RIYADH, May 14 (Bernama) -- Leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and US President Donald Trump convened in the Saudi capital on Wednesday for the GCC-US Summit to discuss key regional and global issues, and strengthen cooperation across various sectors.
Hosted by Saudi Arabia, the summit coincides with Trump’s visit to the Kingdom and underscores the strategic importance of the GCC-US partnership in addressing pressing challenges in the Middle East.
Discussions are likely to focus on regional stability, economic cooperation and security issues.
According to local media, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan are in Riyadh to attend the summit.
Oman is represented by Sayyid Asa’ad bin Tarik Al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Affairs and Personal Representative of the Sultan of Oman.
The GCC comprises six member states - Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Previous US-GCC summits were held in 2022, 2017, 2016 and 2015.
Trump, who arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday morning, also participated in the Saudi-US Investment Forum while in the Kingdom.
His visit to Riyadh forms part of a four-day tour of the Middle East and marks his first official international trip since returning to the White House for a second term in January this year.
The visit mirrors his maiden overseas tour in 2017, which also began in Saudi Arabia, and is widely viewed as a reaffirmation of the long-standing ties between Washington and Riyadh, and part of his broader diplomatic and economic engagement strategy in the Gulf.
From Riyadh, Trump will travel to Doha, Qatar on May 14 and Abu Dhabi, UAE on May 15.
