SEOUL, May 10 (Bernama-Yonhap) -- South Korea’s conservative People Power Party (PPP) has initiated an unprecedented process to replace its presidential candidate, following the breakdown of talks to unify the candidacies of Kim Moon Soo and former Prime Minister Kim Moon Soo.
The move comes amid concerns that failure to unite the conservative front could weaken its chances in the 3 June presidential election, Yonhap news agency reported.
Once the party finalises its decisions, all PPP members must vote on the outcome.
The final candidate is due to be named at a national committee meeting on Sunday -- the deadline for registering a presidential nominee with the state election commission.
On Saturday, the party convened its emergency committee and election management body to deliberate on key decisions, including the possible cancellation of Kim’s candidacy, Han’s party membership, and other related matters.
Lee Jae Myung, the Democratic Party (DP)’s candidate, continues to extend his lead in recent polls.
