ELEVEN KILLED IN LORRY-MINIVAN CRASH IN CENTRAL JAVA

JAKARTA, May 7 (Bernama) -- Eleven people were killed and six others injured when a lorry collided with a public minivan on a steep road in Indonesia’s Central Java province, police said.

The crash occurred midday Wednesday on a winding stretch between Purworejo and Menggelang regencies in Bener subdistrict, an area known for sharp bends and steep gradients.

“The suspected cause is the dangerous road condition, which poses a risk if the vehicle or driver is not in the best condition,” said Purworejo Police Chief, Grand Commissioner Adjutant (AKBP) Andry Agustiano.

Speaking to Metro TV’s Breaking News programme, he said the lorry, descending the slope from the direction of Magelang to Purworejo, attempted to overtake a public minivan but is believed to have lost control.

As a result, the lorry collided with the minivan, causing both vehicles to overturn and crash into a house by the roadside.

“Emergency teams are continuing efforts to remove the overturned lorry and ensure no more victims are trapped,” Andry said, adding that the number of minivan passengers is still being verified, and an investigation is ongoing.
