NEW DELHI, April 21 (Bernama-dpa) -- US Vice President JD Vance begins a four-day visit to India on Monday, with a meeting scheduled in the evening with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, German news agency (dpa) reported.
India's Ministry of External Affairs said the visit provides an opportunity to take stock of progress in bilateral relations, with economic and trade cooperation expected to feature prominently. Discussions will also cover developments in foreign and security policy.
The trip follows Modi's visit to Washington two months ago, where he met with President Donald Trump. During that meeting, the two leaders set an ambitious target of more than doubling bilateral trade to US$500 billion by 2030.
Shortly after Modi's visit, Trump imposed 26 per cent tariffs on Indian goods as part of a sweeping set of trade measures affecting a slew of countries.
Those tariffs were suspended on April 9 for 90 days to allow space for negotiations. Since then, the Trump administration has sought individual trade agreements with key partners, including India.
Vance is travelling with his wife, Usha, who was born in California to Indian parents, and their three children. The family will also visit the cities of Jaipur and Agra before departing for Washington on Thursday.
The family spent Easter weekend in Rome, where the vice president briefly met Pope Francis.
