KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- Thousands of kilometres away from home, the Malaysian diaspora in southern China and Japan gathered in unity and joy to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri, rekindling the festive spirit through food, fellowship and tradition.
According to a statement by the Consulate General of Malaysia in Guangzhou, a Hari Raya event was hosted on Saturday for the Malaysian community residing in Guangdong and Fujian provinces.
Malaysian Consul General to Guangzhou, Suraya Pauzi, noted that such Hari Raya gatherings remain among the rare opportunities for the Malaysian diaspora to reconnect and celebrate their shared heritage overseas.
The statement also noted that, in the spirit of ASEAN solidarity, the Consuls General of Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Laos attended the celebration.
The event drew around 250 Malaysians, comprising professionals, students and their families.
Also present were Kedah and Selangor Executive Councillors, Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah and Ng Sze Han, who were in Guangzhou for working visits, as well as Consuls General of Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Laos.
Meanwhile, in Tokyo, the spirit of Hari Raya was also felt at the Embassy of Malaysia during a celebration hosted by the Malaysian Ambassador to Japan, Datuk Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany, and his wife Datin Suriyah Abdullah.
The celebration was also attended by Malaysians residing in Japan, including students, as well as invited Japanese guests.
