MALAYSIA EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF FORMER LAO PRESIDENT KHAMTAY SIPHANDONE

KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) -- Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin on Tuesday signed the condolence book at the Embassy of Laos here on the recent passing of former president of Laos, Khamtay Siphandone.

Wisma Putra, on its Facebook, said Mohamad also met with Lao ambassador to Malaysia, Thepthavone Sengmany, to express condolences and sympathies on behalf of the government and the people of Malaysia. 

“The late former president Khamtay Siphandone had made valuable efforts in strengthening Malaysia-Lao PDR bilateral ties and to regional peace and prosperity,” the posting read. 

According to Lao News Agency, Siphandone died of natural causes on April 2, at the age of 102.

Lao people gathered at That Luang Esplanade in Vientiane on April 7 to pay their final respects to Siphandone at a state funeral held in his honour.
