CANADA INITIATES WTO DISPUTE WITH US OVER 25 PER CENT TARIFFS ON CARS

08/04/2025 11:13 AM

GENEVA, April 8 (Bernama-dpa) -- Canada has initiated a dispute with the United States at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over US tariffs on cars and automobile parts, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The WTO said on Monday that Ottawa has requested consultations with the US, a step that usually leads to arbitration proceedings.

Under WTO rules, arbitrators would decide whether the measures are justified or not.

The Canadian move comes after US tariffs of 25 per cent on imports of cars took effect on April 2.

However, the WTO is currently facing disruption as the US has blocked the appointment of new appeal judges for several years.

This means that no decision can be made if countries appeal against rulings by WTO arbitrators.

The US has also failed to pay its contributions to the Geneva-based organisation, amid rumours that the administration of US President Donald Trump intends to withdraw from the body.
