KUALA LUMPUR, April 6 (Bernama) -- Pakistan on Saturday handed over its second consignment of humanitarian aid, comprising 35 tonnes of emergency relief supplies, to Myanmar for victims of the recent deadly earthquake.
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in a statement issued in Islamabad, said that 35 tonnes of emergency relief supplies were delivered to the Myanmar authorities at Yangon International Airport, bringing the total aid dispatched by Pakistan to 70 tonnes.
The aid consignment was officially handed over by Ambassador of Pakistan in Myanmar, Imran Haider, along with diplomats and officials from the Pakistan Embassy, to the Chief Minister of Yangon Region and the Director General (Training) of Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Acting on the directives of the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, NDMA coordinated and expedited the dispatch of the relief materials within a short timeframe.
“The Government of Pakistan and Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority remains steadfast in its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to earthquake-affected people of Myanmar,” the statement said.
Media reported that the death toll from Myanmar's 7.7-magnitude earthquake had risen to 3,471 as of Saturday, with 4,671 people injured and 214 still missing.
