JAKARTA, May 6 (Bernama) -- At least 12 people were killed and 23 others injured when a bus overturned in the Indonesian city of Padang Panjang, West Sumatra, on Tuesday morning, local authorities said.

West Sumatra police said the injured comprised 17 men and six women, adding that the identification process for the victims was still under way.

Emergency teams were dispatched to the scene and transported the injured to nearby hospitals, according to the Padang Panjang City Disaster Management Operations Control Centre (Pusdalops PB).

“The victims who were successfully evacuated have been taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention,” the centre said in a statement, noting that the cause of the crash was still under investigation.

Local media reported the bus had been travelling from Bukittinggi towards Padang when it allegedly suffered brake failure while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle.
