SINGAPORE PM, CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE PAY TRIBUTE TO POPE FRANCIS

SINGAPORE, April 21 (Bernama) -- Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has extended his condolences to the Catholic community and the Vatican following the passing of Pope Francis on Monday at the age of 88.

Wong said the Pope’s leadership and compassion had touched countless lives, inspired hope, and strengthened efforts to foster harmony across all faiths and bring people together. 

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. I extend my condolences to the Catholic community in Singapore and around the world, the Vatican, and all those who mourn this loss,” he said in a Facebook post.

Wong added that he had the honour of meeting the pontiff during his state visit to Singapore in September last year – the first papal visit to the country in nearly four decades.

“The Pope brought with him an uplifting message of compassion and inclusivity that resonated with many Singaporeans. He leaves behind a lasting and strong legacy that will be remembered for years to come,” Wong said.

Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore described Pope Francis as a beacon of mercy, compassion, and unity, not only for Catholics but for people across the globe, especially the weak, the marginalised, and the poor.

In a message to the community issued by the Archbishop’s Communications Office, the Archdiocese, which oversees some 395,000 Catholics in Singapore, praised the late Pope’s unwavering commitment to inclusivity.

“He spoke for displaced refugees and victims of war, and urged world leaders to seek peace through dialogue and justice.

“His actions inspired the faithful to be the face of Christ to others and reach out to those on the fringes of society,” the message read.

The Archdiocese also highlighted Pope Francis’s strong advocacy for environmental stewardship, referencing his encyclical Laudato Si (Praise Be to You), which called for global action against climate change and urged people to take responsibility for the care of the Earth.

Recalling his visit to the country, the Archdiocese noted that Pope Francis emphasised the importance of interfaith dialogue, particularly during a gathering with youth representatives from various religious communities.

“He urged the youth of today to be courageous and open to feedback in order to have sincere dialogue with one another,” it added.
