XI ADVOCATES 'SHARED FUTURE' VISION IN SOUTHEAST ASIA TOUR

PHNOM PENH, April 21 (Bernama) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping toured Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia with his sagacious diplomatic vision of building a global community with a shared future, a vision he first articulated in 2013.

Governments from Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, to Phnom Penh majestically welcomed the 71-year-old Xi last week. 

Xi’s tour was seen as a confidence-building mission aimed at deepening regional cooperation and strengthening trust through enhanced trade, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges.

American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia President Casey Barnett said that Xi aims to present China as a stable and reliable partner for trade, infrastructure development and regional connectivity.

“He is making reference to China’s historical ties with these countries that date back centuries, attempting to frame the Sino-Southeast Asia relationship as natural and timeless,” Barnett told Bernama.

Xi first arrived in ASEAN’s emerging economic powerhouse, Vietnam, followed by Malaysia, whose largest trading partner is China, with bilateral trade reaching RM450 billion (approximately US$100 billion) in 2024. 

In addition to serving as the chair of ASEAN this year, Malaysia also acts as the current country coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, making it a significant stopover.

His final stop was Cambodia, another strong traditional ally of Beijing in the region.

During Xi's highly publicised Southeast Asian visit, the signing of multiple trade agreements in the three capitals further signalled rock-solid trade ties with China.

Asanga Abeyagoonasekera, Senior Fellow and Executive Director of the South Asia Foresight Network at The Millennium Project in Washington DC, said the visit was a carefully calibrated signal to the world that China remains a credible and stable partner amid rising geopolitical turbulence.

“As the sole rising power in Asia - unmatched in economic, trade, and military capacity - China is asserting its role as a responsible actor in a shifting global order.

“Xi’s diplomatic outreach reinforces China’s commitment to regional cooperation and multilateralism,” Asanga told Bernama in an email interview.

ASEAN remains China’s major trading partner, with two-way trade at RM4.3 trillion (US$980) billion in 2024, underscoring the importance of cordial relations between the two.  

“Each of these countries holds strategic significance for China. Vietnam, sharing a long border with China, is a key economic partner and a crucial player in the regional balance of power. Its rapid economic growth and central role in ASEAN make it indispensable.

“Cambodia, often referred to as China’s ‘iron (clad) brother’, has long been a loyal ally and a strategic foothold for Beijing in mainland Southeast Asia. Malaysia, whose largest trading partner is China, continues to play a vital role in regional connectivity and cooperation,” said Asanga.

Xi’s pragmatic vision for a shared future is seen as timely, though fast-shifting ground realities may shape its trajectory in the evolving regional landscape.
