KUCHING, April 17 (Bernama) -- InvestSarawak and China Energy Engineering Investment Corporation Ltd (CEEIC) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop large-scale renewable energy generation and infrastructure projects in Sarawak, with a potential investment value of US$1.35 billion (RM6 billion).

In a statement, InvestSarawak said the renewal energy projects will have a total capacity of two gigawatts.

The strategic partnership aims to support Sarawak’s transition towards a low-carbon manufacturing and hydrogen economy under the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who is also the state’s Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, witnessed the signing ceremony.

The MoU was signed by He Lei, chief economist and general manager of CEEIC’s Overseas Department, and Timothy Ong Wye Ern, chief executive officer of InvestSarawak.

Speaking at the event, Awang Tengah said the investment reaffirms Sarawak’s position as a hub for renewable energy and sustainable development in the region.

“We welcome this strategic investment, which aligns with our commitment to harness clean energy and strengthen Sarawak’s role in advancing the green economy under PCDS 2030,” he said.

Meanwhile, CEEIC deputy general manager Wang Honggang said the company is honoured to partner with InvestSarawak and the Sarawak government in this transformative initiative.

“Sarawak offers tremendous potential for the development of large-scale solar and hybrid energy systems.

“We are committed to contributing long-term value and supporting Sarawak’s power development plans, subject to necessary approvals from Chinese authorities,” he said.

InvestSarawak, an agency under the purview of the Ministry for International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED) Sarawak, offers a comprehensive range of services to investors and project developers, from the initial conceptualisation of projects to the eventual successful commercialisation and implementation.

CEEIC is a wholly owned subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation Ltd (CEEC), specialising in energy infrastructure investments with a strong focus on renewable energy projects such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power.
