KUALA LUMPUR, April 16 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) clinched the Women In Tech award at the Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025 Asia-Pacific Finals, highlighting Malaysia’s progress in nurturing female talents in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

Huawei Malaysia, in a statement, said UM female tech talents Cheu Zi Yuan, Kek Yi Ci, and Chew Ying were honoured for their innovation and excellence in the field.

Held in Kuala Lumpur, the regional finals gathered over 110 participants from 12 countries and areas, including Hong Kong and Macau. Contestants competed across four specialised tracks - Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation.

The competition also recognised excellence through three special awards - Women in Tech, TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion, and the Green Development Award, as well as a Teaching Award.

“Innovation knows no gender. Technology is for everyone; it can solve problems and make a real impact,” Ceu Zi Yuan, expressing her joy at the win.

More than 8,000 students had participated in the regional rounds, but only 35 top-performing teams advanced to the Asia-Pacific finals. The one-day event marked a major milestone for ICT talent development in the Asia-Pacific region.

UM was also awarded Third Prize in the Cloud Track, making it one of the few institutions to earn multiple recognitions at the finals.

Malaysia had a strong overall showing, with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) winning First Prize in the Innovation Track, while Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR)  and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) secured the Third Prize in the Computing Track. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) earned Third in the Network Track.

The event, co-hosted by Huawei and the ASEAN Foundation under the theme “Connectivity, Honour, and the Future”, was graced by the Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

Huawei Asia Pacific Region Vice President Alex Zhang said the competition served as a platform to bridge students with real-world opportunities and to drive cross-border innovation and collaboration.

“Huawei will continue working with industry and academia to build a sustainable learning ecosystem, equipping future ICT leaders with key technologies such as 5G, AI, and cloud computing,” he said.

The national-level Malaysian round of the competition, Huawei ICT Competition Malaysia 2024-2025, took place in December 2024, attracting over 1,200 participants from 40 public and private universities nationwide.

According to the statement, Grand Prize winners included teams from Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia have secured their spots in the Global Finals to be held in Shenzhen later this year. Other special awards went to the National University of Singapore (TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (Green Development), and Indonesia’s APTIKOM (Teaching Award).
