JAKARTA, March 30 (Bernama) -- Authorities have urged both the local government and the public to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks following a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province, on Sunday morning.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) called on residents to stay informed and follow any instructions from local authorities regarding emergency measures.
In a statement, the agency also warned of the possibility of further seismic activity and advised the public to remain prepared for additional tremors at any time.
“In the event of an earthquake, stay calm and avoid panic. Take shelter under a sturdy table, avoid glass materials, and evacuate to open ground once the shaking has stopped,” said BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari.
The earthquake, which occurred at 9.58 am local time, had its epicentre on land, 10 kilometres below the surface.
Although no tsunami threat was reported, the tremor lasted for two to three seconds, causing buildings to sway and windows to rattle, he explained.
Initial reports suggest no fatalities or significant damage from the quake.
