KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has extended his condolences to the family of prominent women's rights activist Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan, 98, who died this morning.

Anwar, in a Facebook post, described the late Rasammah as a steadfast and courageous advocate, who consistently championed justice, gender equality, and peace.

“I was shocked to receive news of the passing of Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan this morning. She was a prominent figure in Malaysia.

“The legacy she left behind will undoubtedly make a lasting impact, and serve as a powerful source of inspiration for the women's struggle in Malaysia. She also dedicated her life as an educator at Penang’s Methodist Girls' School,” he said.

Anwar said that Rasammah's name is etched in history as a staunch advocate for women's rights, notably championing the principle of ‘equal pay for work of equal value’ - a struggle which continues to benefit today's generation, even if it is often forgotten.

“Personally, I remember her as someone who not only stood firmly for justice, but also as a close supporter, who stood by me from the very beginning,” Anwar said.

“In the dark era of 1998, she was one of the voices that gave light and became a source of strength for me and my family. Her passing will undoubtedly leave a deep impact, not just on me personally, but also on the country and the people as well," he said.

Anwar also expressed hope that the legacy left by the late Rasammah would be appreciated by all, especially in the ongoing efforts to uplift and champion the voices and rights of women.

Rasammah, a freedom fighter, educator, and pioneer in the struggle for equal pay, passed away due to old age, at her residence in Damansara Heights, here, at 9 this morning.
