SERDANG, May 13 (Bernama) -- Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has embarked on a freshwater crayfish farming project as part of efforts to enhance national food security and conserve aquatic ecosystems.
UPM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said the initiative also aims to broaden students' knowledge in aquaculture.
“This farming project involves the cultivation of freshwater crayfish (blue crayfish), which is gaining attention in the aquaculture industry due to its fast growth rate, high nutritional value and strong market potential.
“The initiative is in line with UPM’s Food Security Blueprint, particularly in strengthening smart agriculture systems, ensuring food safety and development and making aquatic resources more accessible to Malaysians,” he said.
He said this after officiating the freshwater Crayfish release event at the university’s Kolej Tan Sri Aishah Ghani (KTAG) here today.
