KLANG, April 11 (Bernama) -- A married couple and their three children were forced to seek shelter in a nearby surau after their home in Taman Meru Indah was flooded at around 3 am due to heavy rainfall.
Muhammad Ammar Abu Kassim, 32, said that during the incident, he contacted both the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Rapid Response Squad and the Meru police station to seek information regarding the relief centre that had been set up.
He explained that as no relief centre was open at the time, he quickly took his family to the surau around 5.30 am, as floodwaters had filled the entire house.
“After waiting for over two hours and seeing the water rise to calf-deep, I didn’t want to risk it, so I quickly looked for shelter,” he said when met by Bernama at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Binjai today.
Muhammad Ammar is one of 134 residents from 33 families who were relocated to the relief centre after their homes were flooded following heavy rain late last night, which also affected several areas, including Jalan Cempaka, Jalan Kenangan, Jalan Teratai, and Taman Meru Indah.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Ammar’s wife, Nabilah Zakaria, 30, said they arrived at the relief centre at 8 am after a friend alerted them via text message.
“With small kids, especially my youngest, who’s only four months old, and not knowing where to go, I was really worried,” she said.
“Alhamdulillah, a friend told us about this relief centre, and we headed straight over. I’m really grateful the registration process was quick. I had already packed all the important documents before we left the house,” she added.
Another victim, Razman Zakaria, 52, said he stayed awake all night, constantly checking the water level as it continued to rise.
Having lived in the area for more than 40 years, Razman said this morning’s flood still caused him concern, despite elevating his house by 2 feet (0.6 metres) after a major flood four years ago.
“I decided to stay at home, praying for the rain to stop, even though the water in the yard was up to my calves,” he said when met at Jalan Kenangan here.
