BINTULU, April 8 (Bernama) -- The retaining wall project aimed at mitigating the recurring landslide issue at Taman Belle Hill here is expected to be completed by the end of this month, said Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Responding to public concern following yet another landslide in the area, Tiong said his special affairs officer Steven Kong Kai Seng along with Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) general manager Datuk Muhamad Yakup Kari and a representative from the developer of a nearby residential project had visited the site to assess the situation and talk to affected residents.
While approximately 40 metres of the retaining wall is unfinished, Tiong noted that the sections already completed have been effective in preventing further incidents.
“Based on on-site observations and feedback from residents, there have been no further signs of soil erosion or landslides where the wall has been completed,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The most recent landslide occurred in an area where construction on the retaining wall has yet to be finalised. Tiong said Muhamad Yakup has directed all involved parties to speed up completion to avoid further danger to residents.
He stressed that the landslide issue has persisted for over a year and must now be resolved with urgency.
“Delays are no longer acceptable. If left unresolved, residents will continue to live in fear, especially during periods of heavy rain,” he added.
Following the wall’s completion, Tiong stated that earthworks will commence in phases, with overall restoration works expected to be completed by the end of May and a 12-month monitoring period will follow to ensure stability and safety, during which greenery will be planted to further reinforce the soil.
In addition, the developer of the adjacent new residential project has committed to repairing homes that were damaged due to the landslides once the construction work concludes.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that every stakeholder lives up to their responsibilities. Our goal is to restore a safe and stable living environment for the residents of Taman Belle Hill as soon as possible,” he added.
