Khazanah Redirects Raya Meals To Communities In Need Following Open House Cancellation

KUALA LUMPUR, April 19 (Bernama) -- Khazanah Nasional Bhd has redistributed food originally prepared for its Hari Raya Aidilfitri Open House to support nearly 3,000 individuals in need, following the cancellation of the event as a mark of respect for the passing of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

A spokesperson from Khazanah said the initiative, which took place from April 15-16, ensured that no food went to waste, while also honouring the legacy of Tun Abdullah, who was Khazanah’s former chairman.

The warm meals and festive treats were delivered to low-income (B40) communities, orphanage homes, and welfare centres through collaborative efforts with the Food Aid Foundation, via the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Khazanah’s Volunteer Network (KVN), Women of Will, and vendors.

Food items distributed included cold appetisers, marinated meats, cooked meals, and desserts, while buffet-style dinners and festive food stalls, such as burger kiosks, coconut shake stands, and local snack booths, were set up at selected “surau” (Muslim prayer halls) and community centres.

“In addition to the food distribution, the programme featured ‘tahlil’ prayers and quiet evening gatherings with community members and caretakers, in remembrance of Malaysia’s fifth prime minister, Tun Abdullah,” the spokesperson said.

The food redistribution is part of Khazanah’s broader commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and purposeful action.

On April 15, Khazanah announced the cancellation of its Aidilfitri Open House originally scheduled for the same date at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in respect of Tun Abdullah’s passing.

Abdullah, who served as prime minister from 2003 to 2009, breathed his last at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at 7.10 pm on April 14 at the age of 85.
