PUTRAJAYA, April 15 (Bernama) -- U Mobile Sdn Bhd has appointed Huawei Malaysia and ZTE Malaysia as its technology (tech) partners for its next-generation (gen) 5G network.

U Mobile chairman Tan Sri Vincent Tan said these partnerships were selected based on a rigorous, transparent process to ensure the company has the best technology providers to support its goals to achieve 80 per cent population coverage within the first 12 months of commencing its network deployment and lay a strong foundation for innovative 5G services for both consumers and enterprises.

He said both companies have long been U Mobile’s trusted infrastructure partners and have demonstrated exceptional global deployment capabilities.

“Huawei will oversee the deployment of our 5G network in West Malaysia, while ZTE will lead in East Malaysia.

“We look forward to working closely with both partners as we usher Malaysia into the 5G era,” he said in his speech at the U Mobile Next-Gen 5G Network Press Conference and signing ceremony here today.

Tan said the government’s introduction of the 5G dual network model has fostered greater industry participation, encouraged healthy competition, and driven innovation, service quality, and affordability.

“As U Mobile chairman, I am proud that we can play a significant role in supporting the national digital agenda.

“From the National Digital Network (Jendela) to the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint and the MyDigital initiative, U Mobile has been a committed partner, (including in) bridging the digital divide through the universal service provision programme,” he said.

He said U Mobile’s aggressive investments and continuous innovation have led to competitive offerings and enhanced services.

“To date, we have invested over RM8 billion in network and technology infrastructure, (and) we remain committed to further investments to build a best-in-class 5G network.

“We are proud to be the first in the country to offer unlimited data, free roaming, and contract-free 5G fixed wireless broadband plans,” he said.

Tan noted that the company’s pioneering efforts have earned the MADANI government’s endorsement to roll out Malaysia’s second 5G network.

Earlier, Communication Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, China’s Party Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng and Tan witnessed the signing of the agreement between U Mobile, Huawei Malaysia and ZTE Malaysia as technology partners for U Mobile’s next-gen 5G network.

U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck inked the respective agreements, one with Huawei Malaysia represented by its chief executive officer Simon Sun, and another with ZTE Malaysia represented by its managing director Steven Ge.

Meanwhile, during the media briefing, U Mobile chief technology officer Woon Ooi Yuen said the company’s enterprise-grade, next-gen 5G network will enhance customers’ total experience as it features the most advanced and future-proofed hardware and software technology.

“The 5G network will have cutting-edge capabilities, future-ready infrastructure, efficient network structure and robust network security and resilience.

“The network will prioritise key focus areas such as transportation hubs, medical and sports facilities, smart cities and data centres, (with the) deployment to also include 5G indoor coverage in all areas of the building,” he said.

He added that both Huawei and ZTE were chosen as U Mobile technology partners due to their global technology track record and shared vision for an efficient and rapid rollout.
