LuMIC To Attract RM72 Bln Investments, Create Over 50,000 Jobs By 2050 -- Saarani

KUALA LUMPUR, April 10 (Bernama) -- The development of the Lumut Maritime Industrial City (LuMIC) in Perak is expected to attract RM72 billion in investments and create over 50,000 job opportunities within the next 25 years, said Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

He said the project, being developed on a 9,307-hectare site in Segari, will be a major contributor to Perak’s economic transformation agenda and is set to begin by 2026, with the first phase targeted to start in 2030.

“The LuMIC initiative is in line with the aspirations of the Perak Sejahtera 2030 plan through Flagship 13: The Maritime Hub and Nusantara Port, aiming to make Perak a competitive, sustainable, and strategic investment destination in the region,” he said in his speech at the official presentation of the LuMIC feasibility study here today.

The feasibility study was backed by a RM9.5 million grant from the European Union (EU) via its Global Gateway strategy and carried out by Belgian-based Port of Antwerp-Bruges International (PoABI) and supported by Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak.

The study identified seven key industrial zones focused on high-potential sectors like green energy, ship recycling, marine engineering, and maritime 3D printing.

Saarani said the project will be developed in phases, aligned with global trends such as the green, blue, and digital economies, and will comprise an international-standard port, eco-friendly industrial zones, and a sustainable smart city.

“Malaysia, particularly Perak, holds strong potential to lead the blue economy through sectors like fisheries, maritime tourism, renewable energy, and marine biotechnology, with Perak alone contributing 22.8 per cent to the nation’s total fisheries output in 2023,” he said.

He also said LuMIC is capable of addressing global challenges through sustainable approaches such as carbon reduction, renewable energy adoption, and resilient supply chains while also supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap and positioning Perak as a maritime sustainability leader in ASEAN.

“Supported by international partners such as PoABI, the EU, and local regulators, LuMIC is implemented based on the environmental, social, and governance principles, with the aim of not only attracting global investments and logistics players but also spurring growth among innovative small and medium enterprises and generating widespread economic spillover across the state,” he said.

He added that the Perak state government is committed to infrastructure and strategic projects that benefit the people, with LuMIC included in key initiatives announced in Budget 2025, such as the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP), Raw Water Transfer Project from Sungai Perak, Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), and Silver Valley Technology Park.

“Over the next few years, these high-impact projects will begin to show significant physical progress, strengthening Perak’s position as one of the nation’s leading states in economic development,” said Saarani.

He further said that following the approval of the West Ipoh Span Expressway connecting Gopeng to Kuala Kangsar, the Perak state government has proposed a new highway linking Tanjong Malim to Lumut to enhance logistics connectivity between the AHTV and LuMIC.

“This highway network will ease industrial movement and goods transportation while accelerating supply chain integration between the central and western regions of the state,” he said.
