KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 (Bernama) — A former central banker has warned that the ongoing US-China trade war, which has seen tariffs on Chinese goods rise by over 104 per cent, will have a long-lasting impact on global markets, including Malaysia and ASEAN countries.

George Town Institute of Open and Advanced Studies chairman and Institute for Capital Market Research distinguished fellow Tan Sri Andrew Sheng emphasised the trade war is not a temporary factor but part of a broader geopolitical rivalry that is likely to persist for years.

“This is not a short-term issue. The trade war is part of a larger rivalry. So, we are looking at a protracted (war). Obviously, every president hopes to solve it within four years. But we've now seen that what the US President Donald Trump started in 2016 has now carried on through Former US President Joe Biden and now Trump in his second term."

“So, this is not short term. I do not think that these problems will be solved,” Sheng, who was formerly assistant governor at Bank Negara Malaysia, told the media on the sidelines of the ASEAN Investment Conference 2025 today.
