KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- Global Consumer Tech & Durables sales are projected to reach US$1.29 trillion in 2025, driven by emerging markets, replacement cycles, and premium innovation, according to NielsenIQ’s (NIQ) latest Consumer Tech Industry Trends 2025 report.
NIQ Global President of Tech & Durables, Julian Baldwin in a statement, emphasised that manufacturers and retailers need to offer genuine value and innovation that resonates with purpose-driven consumers to succeed in 2025 and beyond.
In 2025, television (TV) upgrades are expected to be delayed until 2026, with innovation and the replacement of broken units driving demand. Sales of 70-inch and larger TVs increased by 25 per cent in 2024, reflecting a continued shift toward immersive in-home experiences.
Gaming personal computers (PCs) are entering replacement cycles as purchases made during the 2020 lockdown need upgrades, while the global audio category grew by three per cent, fuelled by demand in emerging markets and the rising popularity of wireless headbands and open-ear headphones.
Premium smartphones continue to be in high demand, with 71 per cent of consumers now keeping their devices for over three years, up from 52 per cent in 2020. Sales of smartphones priced above US$600 grew by six per cent, while demand for lower-priced models declined by one per cent.
Although artificial intelligence (AI) remains a minor factor in purchase decisions, its influence is steadily growing. In the health technology sector, wearables are experiencing continued growth, with AI-powered health features expected to further accelerate premium growth in 2025.
In workspace technology, a new wave of PC and laptop replacements is underway as devices purchased during the 2020 pandemic near obsolescence. Consumers are prioritising memory (55 per cent), operating system (50 per cent), and battery life (49 per cent) when upgrading.
Additionally, promotional events are becoming increasingly significant for tech sales, with 33 per cent of 2024 sales occurring during key promotions, up from 29 per cent in 2021. In 2025, consumers are expected to plan around seasonal deals more than ever.
Regionally, China (+five per cent) and Emerging Asia (+four per cent) will lead global growth, with the Middle East & Africa and North America following closely behind.
NIQ’s Consumer Tech Industry Trends 2025 report provides businesses with strategic insights to unlock category growth, target evolving consumer needs, and drive revenue through data-driven innovation.
